1.9 TDI doesn't tell the whole story on which generation engine from the VW group. There is branch of engines with injection pumps, North America code ALH; and there is another branch with pumpe duse (PD) injectors, North America codes BEW, BRM, BHW. All of those engines are 1.9L and 8 valves.
If you take care of your car, use a pyrometer, an oil temp gauge and a true oil cooler your NA diesel will perform like a TD for years and years. The ECO diesel is a turbo engine without a turbo pump. Lack of fuel will not melt pistons like it will in a gas engine. Diesels run lean and detonate by nature.
You can never run mere 1,9liter diesel at required rpm levels to make compressor work for you. You mention on using a turbo from a 1,6td in your 1,9liter engine. I suggest you drop the idea. The 1,6td unit has a turbine housing of a 0,36 ratio. This will make your 1,9 liter engine perform really well from approxiamately 1000rpm to about 3000rpm.
ACME makes an adapter/flywheel to go from that bell and input to the 1.9 TDI. The tranny is the Jeep 23 spline input to go to a drivers drop NP231J (or you going put the 23 spline input in the NP231C the s-10's come with).
